The series contains material relating to the fourth generation of the Fairbanks family of Saint Johnsbury, Vermont. It is organized in four subseries: A. Joseph Fairbanks (1881-1964); B. Luella Merrill Fairbanks (1878-1965), wife of Joseph; C. Merrill Family; D. Mabel Fairbanks Robinson (b. 1871). The collection includes many wartime (1917-1918) letters exchanged by Joseph and his mother, Rebecca, as well as correspondence between Joseph and Luella, prior to the family's move from St. Johnsbury to Washington, D. C. Joseph saved business letters and memos from the period 1917 to 1920 and continued to collect publications and clippings into the 1950s. The collection also includes three of Joseph's diaries, including one which he wrote while attending Yale University and one dating from 1900 which describes a trip to Europe, as well as diaries written by Luella during the years 1908 to 1916. There is a small group of letters written by Merrill family members. Also included are two folders of letters written by Mabel Fairbanks Robinson to her mother and brother.

Joseph Fairbanks (1881-1964), the youngest child of William P. and Rebecca Fairbanks, was educated at St. Johnsbury Academy, Yale (class of 1903), and Harvard Law School (class of 1906). He practiced law in St. Johnsbury and, in 1917, volunteered for duty in World War I.
